This year saw the passing of a good friend, Artist, Musician and the other half of bumtapes, Joseph Martin (aka Joey Chainsaw). Its hard to imagine how bumtapes will manage without his contribution and guidance but after a long hiatus its time to get things up and running again, so to start with and as a promise to Joey there's a Limited hand-printed T-shirt he designed (S,M,L) £10 (all profits will go to some special future Chainsaw releases), followed by 3 new bumtapes (chosen by Joey) details to follow soon.

Joey's energy and creativity was, and still is an inspiration, people were drawn to him through it, but also by his humour, compassion and enthusiasm for others, he was also, honestly one of the most handsome men I've ever met...

"a vibrant struggle" is a collaboration between Norwegians Sindre Bjerga and Jan M. Iversen (aka Bjerga/Iversen) and Dutchman Steffan de Turck (aka staplerfahrer). At the end of September 2007, they spent a long weekend in a wooden cabin up high in the Norwegian mountains, to fill up a pile of tapes with some blissful drones, crackling/clanging electro-acoustics, wood thumping and the occasional guitar picking.
"Fossils From the Sun" is sound recorded in Albany, NY by Ray Hare who also plays in Burnt Hills, Century Plants and with other artists in the Albany experimental community. To date its mostly been created using VW and Mercury guitars, microphones, feedback, fx loops and vocals.

New Keijo albums are quite difficult to find these days even though he seems to be quite prolific again after a few years of scattered releases. I fell upon this one by surprise while perusing Eclipse Records catalog. I usually find them on one of the millions of mailing lists I'm on, but this one went right by me, unannounced. These recent records come out on all sorts of obscure labels, yet they sound as if they were taken from one single, weekend jam with friends. They are often quite similar, but this one seems to be an exception. What All Whom Slowly Where Saying Simply Why Still Bright? feels like a breath of fresh air when compared to it's companion's often bland jam sessions. Whom Do You Know for example feels like a hippy folk tune gone wrong while Simply This sounds like an out take from 2005's incredible By The Mountains & The Sea. If you're not too sure which of his latest albums to get, don't hesitate about this one! It won't disappoint!

I wouldn’t guess most would consider this a must-own release, but it certainly presents an interesting piece of the Psychedelic Horseshit puzzle. Fittingly for the format, there’s plenty of experimentation going on as the band plays around with their sound. “Catch a Wave” could’ve been on the album and is their typically awesome noise-pop. Next up is “Rather Dub,” where the tape takes on a life of its own. Devoid of any melodies, the song is a droning soundscape—a completely atmospheric track. This style is expanded upon on the flipside in “Bob Dylan’s 42nd Annual Report,” which is a track full of feedback, Casio play, effects, and stray noises that runs the entire length of the side. About halfway through the song, the band joins in with a short track of acoustic guitar and vocals played directly over the noise track. When it ends, the song plays out as it began, with a hypnotizing array of noise. It’s a cool and unusual tape that I’d recommend spending some time with.(DH)
